A Heritage Day to Remember
The 2ND Annual FCC Heritage Day was held Sunday, April 26 on the grounds of Vista Del Mar. An enthusiastic group of volunteers made the entire day run smoothly and provided a very relaxing social event for both kids and parents. It was great for members to catch up with dear friends and make some new ones while the kids were making their connections too.
The grand marshal was Sha Sha Luo, a frequent performer at our Chinese new year banquets. She led the opening parade with the year of the ox group and following behind were all the kids in their zodiac groups - like countries entering an Olympic stadium. Sha Sha also taught an acrobatics class. The kids got to try and balance some of the platters, stemware, and hoops that Sha Sha makes look so easy!
There was a wide range of ages attending. The class choices appealed to both the youngest and oldest of our members. We had several returning instructors teaching origami, brush painting, and kung fu. New for this year was a hand bag making craft, introduction to Mandarin red knot tying, and for the pre-teens and teens, a hair and makeup demo. (Some of these classes resulted from surveys given to 10 year olds and up at a UCLA China Care meeting.)
Also, at the last minute, Jeri Floyd and four FCC kids teamed up and taught an excellent Chinese dance class with parasols and fans. Thank you Rachel, Celie, Riki, and Jacquelyn for stepping in when the UCLA dancers couldn't make it!
