Latest News from Orange County
What's been happening in Orange County for the past six months or so? In October we screened the documentary Talking With the Moon Princess followed by a discussion for girls ages 10+ with the filmmaker Priscilla Hefley. Thank you Priscilla for joining us and to Christine Friend and all the volunteers who helped organize and run this new event. In November we held our annual art workshop with teacher Melanie Vogel, where kids created works of art to turn into holiday gifts. Thanks Susan Tschabrun for organizing and to the group that helped out on site. December was Holiday Party time, with another great turnout for this OC tradition. This event took a village - thank you Jenifer Weigand
for all the advance arrangements and to Michelle Sheehan, Tanya Turro-Vilander, Debbie Kistler, Sandy Draper, Maggie Davenport, Mary Wattenberg, Patty Uy, their families, and everyone else who pitched in on this event. In March we got together for our first Dim Sum Sunday of 2012 and were happy to have several families with babies in attendance. Thanks Christine Friend for organizing.
If you have photos from any of these past events you'd like to share, please send them to ocfccsocal@gmail.com and we'll get them posted.
What's still to come in 2012? A number of OC parents participated in a March planning meeting to outline the calendar for the rest of the year - see attached. Many of the dates and times are still to be determined, so check your email and www.fccsocal.org for updates as the year progresses. Up next is a kickoff gathering for the Blazing Paddles dragonboat team on April 29. Contact Maggie Davenport at

China Care Bruin Buddies 2010-2011 - Registration Due Sunday, Oct 3
Since 2005, we has been coordinating a mentorship program with the China Care Bruins, a student-run group at UCLA. Last year, more than 50 FCC children were paired with college student “Big Buddies.” They participated in monthly Sunday afternoon get-togethers on the UCLA campus throughout the academic year.
We are delighted to announce that there are a few additional openings in the Buddy Program for the 2010-2011 academic year (October 2010 through May/June 2011). We are continuing to offer two groups within the Buddy Program – the Little Buddies and the Youth Buddies. Both run simultaneously on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 5 pm on the UCLA campus. Parents check their kids in at one location and then the two groups will separate for age-appropriate fun.
Fun With Friends at the 2010 FCC-SoCal Summer Picnic
This year's FCC-SoCal/OCA summer picnic on June 5th rejoined old and new friends alike at an unique park in the city of San Gabriel, in western San Gabriel Valley. We picnicked directly adjacent to Dinosaur Park, an artistic treasure nestled in the quiet corner of Victor Lugo Park. The event was well attended by over fifteen families, and offered opportunities for enjoying delicious food (Hawaiian theme!) and warm conversation. Many members met the new FCC board members for the first time.

OC Kids Learn About Self Defense
The family self defense workshop held Saturday May 15 was a great success! About twenty kids with one or two parents per family turned out for the session. The age range of the kids was from three and a half to ten, with the majority five to seven years old.
Instructor and FCC Mom Laura Hesser did an excellent job. She made it fun for the kids all the while they were learning important information and skills. Laura's set-up was perfect with the parents sitting in the background and the kids sitting up front around her, which resulted in the session being interactive for the kids, both discussion-wise and physically. Laura was able to tailor the session to the age range that attended so there was high participation and the kids seemed to get the messages. The session was relevant and a fun opportunity for the families to get to know each other better. All in all a wonderful event!
Stellar Turnout for the SoCal Friends March in the Golden Dragon Parade
FCC-SoCal had a stellar turnout for the “Friends of FCC” activity to march in the Golden Dragon Parade on Saturday, February 20 in Chinatown! We more than doubled our participation from last year, with over 50 parents, children, and friends.
Despite the threat of weather challenges (this was during the peak of the rainy season!), we had a nice, sunny day! Click through to the full post to see additional photos of the memorable event.
Chinese Dance Class with Anne Ma
On a rainy Saturday in March twenty-five small children in traditional Chinese costume gathered at the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center to learn Chinese folk dance from “Miss Annie;” Anne Ma.
Miss Annie and her two assistants taught their young students “The Firecracker Dance” during the 45 minute session, followed by a short snack break and finally the performance! Parents who had anxiously huddled in the hallways during rehearsal were allowed into the studio to video and photograph their angels as they exhibited a graceful display of dance. Some of the older students partnered with the younger ones to help keep them in step. The results were very impressive! Most importantly all the participants had a fun learning experience!
Campout Fun on Catalina Island
The Catalina Island "Dark of the Moon" Weekend was great fun for the three families who participated - 3 little girls, 2 big brothers, their happy parents and one doting aunt.
Activities included a birthday celebration, volleyball, card games, endless relaxed conversations sitting on benches at Isthmus Harbor, walking all over the isthmus, and yes, stargazing on a very clear night.
It was an absolutely perfect and relaxing weekend - one that will be repeated next year along with, we hope, FCC Moon Festival mountain camping.
